Sunday 19th June 2011
Rayleigh 261-4, net 241
SOSEMT 261-0, net 261
SOSEMT win.
Team: David W (capt.), Kian N-R, Jack H, Thomas L, James B, James D, Toby T, Tom M.
David and Thomas L opened the batting. David received most of the strike hitting 2 fours whilst doing so to high score with 8. Thomas made the most of the deliveries he did get hitting a single 4. In the 4th over SOSEMT\’s Saul delivered a couple of superb deliveries which would have tested many of our adult players. Instead they got him two wickets so after 4 overs we were 218-2.
Kian and James D (a newcomer to the team) batted next, shared the strike more but were unable to do much more than play steadily. We lost 1 wicket during the second 4 overs so after 8 overs we were 224-3.
Jack and Tom M were the third pair, again shared the strike pretty evenly facing some good bowling and playing solidly. They didn\’t lose any wickets and took the score to 235-3.
Toby, an under 9, and James B, another newcomer, were the final pair to play and faced 4 different bowlers in the final overs. Although difficult for them to settle they played carefully until the final ball when they went for a quick single and there was a run out. The score was 261-4, net 241.
After drinks (cold for the Colts, tea for the coaches) Jack and Tom M opened , bowled a couple of wides and needed to adjust to the length but didn\’t concede many runs. After 4 overs SOSEMT were 217-0.
Kian and James D were next. Both bowled well conceding the odd single and there was the odd wide but, frustratingly no wickets. Both deserved one but sometimes a bowler\’s lot is a hard one. 231 for 0.
Toby and James B were bowled overs 9 through 12 and again were miserly but unsuccessful wicket-wise. Toby bowled the first maiden for Rayleigh which given he is playing in an older age group was very good. 244 for 0.
David, having handed the gloves to James B shared the final overs with Thomas L. David tried a mix of spin and seam and had an equal mix of success. Thomas L bowled very well. A good pace, away swing and a good length. But no wickets (might have had an LBW if there had been appeal, but there wasn\’t so I didn\’t have to think about it). The final score was 262 for SOSEMT.
So SOSEMT won. 2 cracking deliveries from Saul and the run out on the final ball of our innings made a huge difference to two well matched sides. The game was played and umpired in a good spirit by SOSEMT. With three debutants in our side, one of which is still an u9 I thought it was a good game. And it didn\’t rain.
Next week we are at home to Thurrock.
