The 3s and 4s continued their excellent run of form in the league and the 2s secured a much needed victory against Rankins. Last week also saw some excellent personal performances, most notably from some of our younger players. Well done to Sam Harmsworth (101*), Sam Keene (81*) and Richard Nolde (74*) – the latter very much on the fringe of being classified a ‘young’ player! Our more senior players also featured with Ben Francis (74) and Matt Walker (71*) scoring runs and Mike Law picked up 3/20 for the 4s.
On Saturday, we will also be showing the UEFA Champions League final which starts at 8pm along with a BBQ. So, get yourself down the club for a beer (or three).

1st XI
Rayleigh lost by 2 wickets (9 points). Click here to view scorecard.
Another gorgeous looking pitch at home for an encounter with Ingatestone & Fryerning CC. The skipper once again won the toss and elected to bat. Rayleigh started cautiously on a pitch that was a bit up and down and two-paced. Impey (12), back from a break was out early, and Cook (13) followed a third of the way through the innings due to some good opening bowling by Berryman (2-26). Francis (74) and Ox (45) built a good 3rd wicket partnership of 86. At 144-3 after 29 overs Rayleigh looked good to push and post a competitive total. 4 wickets for 19 runs looked to have ruined that notion with the opposition skipper (3-31) coming back and tightening things up once again. A call up from the skipper in the shape of Nolde (74*) turned out to be genius. Nolde (releasing his inner Stokes) and Matt Verrinder (26) put on a quick fire 80 for the 8th wicket. In the last 3 overs of the game, Turnbull (12*) joined him to add 36. 279-8 looked like a very good score, but had the wicket started to flatten?
Ingatestone started aggressively and with a bit of luck found gaps through the Rayleigh fielders. The openers fell quickly but put on 47 very quickly. Sammy Verrinder (2-35) bowled particularly well. The pitch was still doing a bit with the new ball but Roy (103*) played steadily to keep the runs ticking over. Harmy and Littler got breakthroughs at the other end to make it 120-4 at drinks and the run rate required had slowly crept up, but there was plenty of time. The middle overs were key and Rayleigh kept it tight for a while. Unfortunately, no wickets fell and the run rate started climbing again. Smith (75) went on the counter offensive and slashed the ball to all parts. Ox (2-52) joined the attack and after some early hammering got the wicket – breaking the 132 run 5th wicket partnership. Only 28 runs needed in 6 overs on a flat deck and with a ball offering nothing it looked like it was job done for the opposition. Rayleigh never know when they are beaten though and reduced the opposition to 271-8 with 3 overs remaining. They couldn’t bag the last 2 though and the game ended in defeat with 7 balls remaining. Full highlights of the game can be viewed here.
2nd XI
Rayleigh won by 13 runs (26 points). Click here to view scorecard.
The 2s travelled to Broomhills to play Rankins. Captain Walker won the toss and elected to bat first. Rayleigh made a solid start, with Steve Lynch and Brad Walker sharing a solid 36 run opening partnership. The skipper, alongside Neil Noble, put on 130 – Matt Walker scoring 71* and Neil Noble 56. James Isherwood also contributed a useful 24 from 26, helping Rayleigh post 234-6.
Rankins started the run chase strongly, despite some quick wickets. Despite some good foundations, regular wickets fell thanks to David Hall (7-3-23-2), Ben Hoskins (9-0-55-2) and Jake Ashworth (6-0-36-2). The total was too much for Rankins, who fell 13 runs short in the 44th over.
3rd XI
Rayleigh won by 10 wickets (22 points). Click here to view the scorecard.
The undefeated 3rd XI headed to Writtle to see if they could continue their winning streak. Winning the toss, Trevor put the opposition into bat. Thanks to some tight bowling from all bowlers, Writtle were bowled out for 137 from 40 overs. Sam Keene (7-2-23-3), John Wright (9-0-31-3) and Ryan Hart (6-0-25-3) were the pick of the bowlers.
Rayleigh were wicketless in reply, knocking off the target in under 30 overs thanks to some excellent batting from Mark Bailey (53*) and Sam Keene (49*) + 39 extras…
4th XI
Rayleigh won by 4 wickets (23 points). Click here to view scorecard.
The 4th XI welcomed Great Waltham to the old ground. Could the 4s make it three wins on the bounce?
Great Waltham won the toss and elected to bat first. Despite an opening stand of 23, regular wickets fell thanks to Zach Skillett (8-2-29-1) and Mike Law (8-2-20-3). Sam Skillett (8-1-30-3) also added to the wickets tally, supported by Freddy and Sam Levett, reducing the opposition to 119-8. Unfortunately, wickets alluded Rayleigh for a period of time and Waltham managed to avoid being all out – posting 166-9.
Rayleigh started well in response, with Josh Francis (40) and Steve Gosling (32) putting on 69 for the first wicket. Unfortunately, quick wickets fell but thanks to a steadfast 26 from Steve Rothon, Rayleigh were able to get over the line with four wickets to spare. The winning runs were scored by Mike Law via his trademark reverse sweep… The 4s now go three games undefeated, but face a challenge next week when they play Theydon Bois who are top of the table.
5th XI
Rayleigh lost by 234 runs (3 points). Click here to view scorecard.
The 5s made the journey to Hatfield with new skipper Marc Smith at the helm. A massive thank you to Ray Hart for looking after the team for the start of the season, I know all players and the club greatly appreciate all your hard work!
Rayleigh put Hatfield into bat, who ended up posting a huge total of 306-7 from 40 overs. Despite the large total, none of the Rayleigh bowlers gave up, with Chloe Martin (5-0-47-2) and Benny Mahoney (8-0-52-2) the pick of the bowlers.
Rayleigh unfortunately never really got going in chase of the total, losing 4 wickets for 4 runs. James Offer (28 from 11 balls) took the attack to the Hatfield bowlers, supported by Terry Martin (24). Unfortunately, Rayleigh slumped to 72 all out from 16 overs.
6th XI
Rayleigh lost by 8 wickets (1 points). Click here to view scorecard.
The 6s hosted a rather strong East Hanningfield and Great Burstead at Rawreth Lane, who had a slightly different team from the week before… Winning the toss and batting first, Rayleigh could only muster 75 and were bowled out in the 30th over thanks to their enhanced bowling attack… Simon Lennox (23) and Mark Callaway (12) were the only batters who could make a dent in the total.
In reply, East Hanningfield knocked the total off in 12 overs. Thomas Lloyd (4-0-23-1) and Robin Peppiatt (2-0-16-1) were the wicket takers.
7th XI
Rayleigh lost by 7 wickets. Click here to view scorecard.
The 7s played Wickford 5th XI at Wickford Memorial Park. The opposition won the toss and elected to put the 7s into bat. Unfortunately, only Joe Peppiatt (16) could reach double figures and Rayleigh were bowled out for 59 from 28 overs.
Wickford were able to chase down the total in 15 overs. Yousuf Khan (3-0-5-2) and Oliver Church (4-0-20-1) taking wickets.
Sunday XI
Rayleigh lost by 9 wickets. Click here to view scorecard.
The Sunday XI hosted the annual fixture against New Calypsonians. Sam Harmsworth won the toss and elected to bat. The skipper opened the batting, putting on 82 for the first wicket with Sangeet Prasad (21) and another 82 runs with James Balkwill (34). Sam managed to reach a second career century and retired on 101* from 79 balls (which included 17 fours). Well done, Harmy! Thanks to contributions from Dave Turner (20) and Josh Mantle (22*), Rayleigh finished on 250-6.
Despite a good performance with the bat, it seemed the opposition had brought some batters with them and managed to chase down the total in a staggering 28 overs for the loss of one wicket. Josh Mantle (3-0-35-1) was the only wicket taker – with no bowler going for less than seven per over! Well done to the young Sunday team on a good performance against our friends at New Calypsonians.
Midweek XI
Rayleigh won by 48 runs. Click here to view scorecard.
The midweek team took on Sandridge in a tour game at Rawreth Lane. Batting first, Rayleigh posted 211-5 from their 35 overs. Sam Keene managed to carry his bat for the full 35 overs, scoring 81 from 86 balls, supported by Sam Harmsworth (43).
In reply, Rayleigh started well with good, tight, bowling from the openers. Regular wickets fell thanks to Freddy Noble (5-2-12-1), Tom Neale-Peppiatt (4-1-21-1), Sam Keene (4-0-6-2) and a fantastic spell from young Teddy Kent (4-0-20-1). Despite some pies from Francis Snr and Balkwill, the opposition fell short – finishing on 163-6 from their 35 overs.
Evening League XI
Rayleigh won by 52 runs. Click here to view scorecard.
The evening league team made the short trip to Church Meadow to face local rivals Rettendon. Rayleigh won the toss and batted first, with Ben Francis (43) and Richard Nolde (47*) top scoring, helping Rayleigh post 135-5 from 16 overs.
Rettendon never really got going with the bat, with only two batters reaching double figures. Richard Nolde starred once again, but this time with the ball, taking three wickets (2-0-7-3). Ian Turnbull also recorded excellent figures of 3-0-15-2. Rettendon could only manage 83-8 from their 16 overs.
U15 Eagles
Eagles won by 7 wickets (20 points). Click here to view scorecard.
The U15s welcomed Hadleigh & Thundersley U15 Heat to Rawreth Lane in the SECPG East league. Captain Murrell won the toss and put the opposition into bat. The Owls started well thanks to opener Arvin Ghataura (17 from 12 balls), but Rayleigh couldn’t quite chase down the target – finishing on 98-10 (net score 248) from their 20 overs.
