1st XI
The 1st team travelled to Aythorpe Roding, winning the toss and batting first. Some tight bowling from the opposition had Rayleigh in trouble at 34-3; however, good batting from Ben Francis (25), Sam Harmsworth (27) and Matt Verrinder (32*) helped Rayleigh reach 169-9 from 45 overs.
In reply, Aythorpe were in trouble at 109-8 but a good knock from one of the opposition batters saw them home with 2 wickets remaining. Ian Turnbull was the pick of the bowlers, recording figures of 4-34. Ian Bryant also took 2-27. RCC lost by 2 wickets.
2nd XI
The 2nd team hosted Hatfield Peverel at home. Captain Walker won the toss and elected to bat on a flat batting surface. The opposition came out very well with the ball, with Rayleigh 42-6 at drinks. Some more tight bowling from Hatfield saw Rayleigh reach a total of 84 all out.
Unfortunately, Rayleigh didn’t have enough runs to defend and Hatfield reached the total required in under 20 overs. Tom Godfrey (6-0-29-1) and Nick Green (6-1-12-1) were the pick of the bowlers. RCC lost by 8 wickets.
3rd XI
The 3rd team, under the stewardship of Neil Noble, headed to Little Baddow in the seventh division. Neil won the toss and batted first, posting 196-5 from 45 overs. Simon Garms top scored with 43, supported by Neil Noble (30*), Henry Murrell (26) and James Isherwood (24*).
Rayleigh started well, with tight bowling from openers Freddy Noble and Xavier Garms. Despite this, Rayleigh struggled to take wickets and Little Baddow were able to pass the total set in 35 overs. John Wright was the pick of bowlers, recording figures of 5-1-21-2. RCC lost by 5 wickets.
4th XI
The 4s hosted Beaulieu Park on the old ground, looking for their first win of the season. Captain Peps lost the toss and the 4s were asked to field first. The opposition started well but were held back by economical bowling from Josh Mantle (7-1-36-3). Despite this, Beaulieu were able to push on and posted 230-8 from their 40 overs.
In reply, Rayleigh started shakily and lost two quick wickets inside the first 10 overs (30-2). Despite this, Rebecca Walker (23) and Phil Hammond (57) built a good partnership until both batters were undone by slow bowlers. Tom Peppiatt (49) nearly played a captain’s innings but unfortunately played onto his stumps in the 37th over with only 14 runs needed to win the game. Josh Mantle and Sam Skillett played supportive roles, taking quick singles and playing intelligent cricket. RCC were bowled out for 216 from 38.1 overs.
Despite the result, all 4th team players contributed to what was a great day’s cricket – well done to all the colts who batted and bowled well. RCC lost by 14 runs.
5th XI
Captain Dave Turner welcomed Galleywood 3s to Rawreth Lane by winning the toss and batting first. Rayleigh started well with Duncan Bond (39) and Steve Rothon (48) top scoring, with Rayleigh reaching 171-9 from their 40 overs allocation.
In reply, the Rayleigh bowlers started well with Marc Smith (4-0-32-2) and Ben Hoskins (5-1-15-1) making early inroads. Duncan Bond bowled economically (8-2-24-1), supported by Mark Callaway (5-0-23-2), but it wasn’t enough to restrict the opposition batters – passing Rayleigh’s total in the 36th over. RCC lost by 4 wickets.
6th XI
The 6s made the long journey to Hornchurch, with skipper Paul Cox winning the toss and batting first. Rayleigh started well, with good contributions from Jack Himpfen-Jones (26), Jack Andrews (33) and Richard Mantell (37*). Josh Francis also batted well but was run out in the final overs for 22. Rayleigh posted 152-4.
In reply, Hornchurch lost a couple of early wickets but were able to chase down the total in the 30th over. Hassan Ahmad (7-0-42-2) and Sangeet Prasad (8-1-25-1) were the pick of the bowlers. RCC lost by 7 wickets.
7th XI
RCC lost the toss and bowled first against Old Chelmsfordians 5th team. OCs posted 147-5 from 35 overs.
Unfortunately, this proved too much for the 7th team, who were bowled out for 99. Scorecard is unavailable currently and will be uploaded in due course. RCC lost by 48 runs.
Sunday XI
The Sunday team played away to Little Baddow. Captain Mayfield won the toss and batted first, on a pitch that clearly resembled tarmac… Rayleigh were able to post 326-7 from 40 overs, Rob Littler (103* from only 52 balls) and Ben Hoskins (67*) top scored.
In reply, Little Baddow came 84 runs short and posted 242-7 from their 40 overs. Jack Ashworth (8-0-38-2) and Sam Harmsworth (7-1-52-2) were the pick of the bowlers. RCC won by 84 runs.
Ladies Team:
The ladies played Hatfield Peverel on Friday. The opposition batted first, scoring 137-6 from their 20 overs. Rebecca Walker (4-0-8-2) was the pick of the bowlers.
In reply, Rayleigh started well with Rebecca Walker retiring on 29, and Georgia Wilson (17) and Zoe Williams (16) making valuable contributions. Despite this, some quick lower order wickets ended Rayleigh’s chase – losing by 1 run. RCC lost by 1 run.
Special mention to Madam Secretary (Sam Mayfield) who played for the Ladies who were short on the day.
Colt Results:
The U13s travelled to Leigh-on-Sea on Thursday 23rd for the semi-final of East Cup. Batting first, Rayleigh scored 145-2 from their 20 overs. Freddie Ashworth (27*), Lewis Mills (25*), Josh Francis (22) and Thomas Lloyd (18) all contributing. In reply, Leigh could only make it to 93 (all out) with Freddie Ashworth (2-0-10-2) and Ryan Hart (1-0-2-2) taking good wickets. RCC won by 52 runs and play in the cup final on Monday 4th July at Rawreth Lane.
The U15s hoped to continue their good form and played Hadleigh in the East Cup semi-final. Due to the rain, the match was limited to 10 overs per side. Hadleigh batted first and scored 95-3, with Xavier Garms taking two wickets (2-0-18-2). In reply, Rayleigh started well with Jake Ashworth hitting an unbeaten 37* and Henry Murrell (28) supported. Unfortunately, this was not enough to get Rayleigh over the line, posting 82-3. RCC lost by 13 runs.
The U13s also played in the league on 26th June, travelling to Wickford. The opposition won the toss and asked Rayleigh to bat first. RCC scored 109-6 with Ryan Hart (25*) top scoring. In reply, Wickford were reduced to 91-8 with Ryan Hart taking two wickets (2-0-5-2). RCC won by 18 runs.
